a major change seen in banking industry by an ex-staff member !

I have left my bank a few years ago, after serving for 33 long years. During these years, i have seen many many changes, upheavals, turning points and major shifts in banking system, which included the dreaded Emergency from year 1975 to 1977 ! But the one thing which stood the test of time was the personal touch in the interactions between the staff and the customers, be they big or small. We used to be concerned about the entire well-being of the person sitting or standing across the counter, always readily wiping a tear and bringing a smile on his or her face, which involved giving them tips about health, the importance of education and being positive in general. I still remember that we used to distribute sweets on each and every festival and even personally delivered new year calenders to the homes of our long-standing customers to wish them a happy new year on the 1st of january each year!  Not so any more ! this personal touch has just disappeared, as if it was never there! No one bothers to look at the person standing in front of the desk, leave alone talking to or asking him to be seated, having the eyes transfixed at the the computer screen on the desk all the time, indicating that something more important is being attended to urgently, which may or may not be true ! No greetings are ever exchanged, no smiles if you please. All attempts by the customer to be friendly with the staff member is returned with a blank stare(of course to discourage further attempts).Nobody remembers anything or anybody. Is this situation beneficial to one and all ? I am of the opinion that the personal touch in everything we do or say is a unique attribute of indian culture and it should never be given up in any field of activity or action ! Am i being old-fashioned in saying this.......a point to ponder!
